what's in a name

.1810 .1814 .1816 Since I started this blog in 2008, it has had 266,222 unique visitors (crazy!). I recently looked through some statistics and found out that my last name is harder to spell/understand than I thought. I found no less than 35 different spellings that have led people from Google to my blog (in combination with the words 'hilda', 'blog', 'photography' etc). The most common (and most understandable) were Granat and Granath, which is how everyone else spells the name. Granat means both grenade and garnet and is pronounced grah-nawt. The 'h' in ours makes absolutely no sense. In fact, it was my grandfather who thought it would be "cool" to add an 'h' in the middle of his last name - and simply started doing it, without ever changing it officially. This means my family (including my father's brothers and their families) is the only one who spells it G-r-a-h-n-a-t. We had the 'h' officially added just four years ago, and every time I tell someone my name I always have to spell it out. But I don't mind, I am proud to be the only person in the world with my name and spelling.

Some of the more incomprehensible versions plenty of people have googled to find my blog were Graahnt, Grhnat, Hrahnat, Grahnart and Granhant. And the ever so appreciated Granhat. Gran = fir tree, hat = hatred, so "hatred of fir trees". Other search terms that have led people here include "celine dion cups", "diet food", "dark sad" (90 people!) and "a banana". Hmm, I hope they weren't disappointed...

it's quite a drag to have to spell our surname... and mine (Pichel) it's not that difficult but everyone gets it wrong somehow...

  3. oh, that is so strange + funny! (i can't believe that "dark sad" would lead people here, though - your blog is anything but!) :)

i, for one, love words, spelling, and grammar, but having dyslexia and dysgraphia, i've had to train myself to memorize what a name looks like, when it's written or typed, and then used that to call up the proper spelling. thankfully, your last name is only 7 letters long...once things get over 10, i'm in trouble, haha. anyway, i agree with your granddad - the 'h' addition is pretty cool!

  4. Ha! I am proud to be number 266222. But I´m not a unique, but a constant visitor! I´ll try the Celine Dion cup googling! Btw. Granat without your Grandpa´s H is the German word for little shrimps. Hope, this unnecessary information will improve your next party small talk!
